Heat Map of Student Protests

The Daily Star · August 2019

On 29 July 2018, two students were killed by a speeding bus on Airport Road, Dhaka. Schoolchildren across the city took to the streets — checking licences, directing traffic, halting ministers' cars. By August 2, Bangladesh Chhatra League members were attacking protesters while police watched. Photojournalists were beaten. Shahidul Alam was arrested for documenting it.

I was at the Daily Star, sitting with journalists and dissecting data as it came in. Outside was chaos. Friends were being attacked. This heat map was designed in that window — plotting protest geography across Dhaka in real time.
